About Matka Canyon

The Treska River has cut a deep gorge through the Suva Gora mountains, and in 1938 a dam created Lake Matka – generally considered the oldest artificial lake in North Macedonia. The protected area covers about 5,000 hectares and is a hotspot of biodiversity: around 20% of its plants are relict or endemic species, and scientists have recorded dozens of endemic butterflies and moths here, some of them new to science.

The canyon also hides dozens of caves – the most beautiful are Vrelo, Krštalna and Ubava – full of stalactites, stalagmites and underground lakes. For official information, see the Canyon Matka website.

Things to do at Matka Canyon

Boat trip to Vrelo Cave

Boats leave from the jetty near St. Andrew’s Monastery and cruise up the lake between the cliffs to Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the world. The trip costs about 500 MKD per person and takes around an hour, including about 20 minutes inside the lit part of the cave. Ask whether cave entry is included before you pay.

Hiking

  • Lakeside path – an easy-to-moderate walk along the cliff above the water, with great views after 20–30 minutes. Some sections are narrow and uneven.
  • St. Nicholas Monastery – a steep climb to a tiny monastery perched on the rock high above the lake, with the best view in the canyon.
  • Vodno to Matka – a long ridge hike from Mount Vodno for strong walkers only.

Monasteries

The Monastery of St. Andrew, built in 1389 right next to the lake, has frescoes of great artistic value, including The Last Supper and Prayer on the Mount of Olives. The Matka Monastery on the left bank of the Treska dates from the 14th century, and St. Nicholas watches over the lake from its clifftop.

Climbing

The Treska canyon is the most important climbing area in northern North Macedonia, with routes for all levels from spring (around Easter) to November.
