Things to see in Mavrovo

Lake Mavrovo and the submerged church

Lake Mavrovo is a reservoir created in the 1950s, when the old village church of St. Nicholas was flooded. Today the church stands half-submerged in the lake – and when the water level drops in late summer and autumn, you can walk right up to it. It is the most photographed spot in the park.

Bigorski Monastery

The Monastery of St. John the Baptist (Sveti Jovan Bigorski), on the road through the Radika valley, is famous for its intricately carved wooden iconostasis made by the masters of the Mijak woodcarving school – the same tradition you can see in Skopje’s Church of St. Spas.

Galičnik

A stone mountain village where old traditions survive. Every July it hosts the Galičnik Wedding, a famous traditional wedding festival that draws visitors from across the country.

Hiking and waterfalls

The park has marked trails through beech and pine forests, and the area around Mount Korab includes one of the highest waterfalls in the Balkans. Climbing Korab itself is a serious full-day hike for experienced walkers.
