Most visitors to Skopje never make it the 45 minutes west to Tetovo, which is exactly why it’s such a rewarding half-day. A day trip from Skopje to Tetovo hands you one of the most photographed buildings in the country — a mosque covered head to toe in painted flowers — a serene dervish lodge next door, and, if you keep driving up, a ski resort and mountain views over the whole Polog valley. Here’s how to do it.
The Colorful Mosque (Šarena Džamija)
Tetovo’s headline sight is the Colorful Mosque, known locally as Šarena Džamija and sometimes as the Painted Mosque. It was first built in 1438 and rebuilt in 1833 by Abdurrahman Pasha, and what makes it so unusual is the decoration: every surface, inside and out, is covered in painted panels — floral designs, geometric patterns and even a depiction said to represent Mecca. It’s a rare example of this kind of exterior painting surviving in Europe, and it takes roughly 30–45 minutes to look around properly.
It is an active mosque, so a few things matter. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, and women should bring a scarf for the head. You’ll take your shoes off at the door. There’s no ticket booth or fixed entry fee; a small donation is appreciated. Try to avoid prayer times, especially around midday on Fridays, when visits aren’t appropriate.
Arabati Baba Tekke
A ten-minute walk further along the road brings you to the Arabati Baba Tekke, often called the finest surviving Bektashi dervish complex in Europe. Set around leafy lawns and a marble fountain, the grounds hold prayer rooms, lodgings and dining halls that once served a whole community of dervishes. It’s a calm, green place to slow down, and together with the mosque it makes the trip feel like a proper glimpse into Tetovo’s Ottoman past.
Popova Shapka and the Šar Mountains
If you have your own car and a bit more time, keep going up. Popova Shapka is a mountain resort in the Šar range, about a 30–40 minute drive above Tetovo, sitting well over 1,700 metres. In winter it’s one of the country’s better-known ski areas; in summer it turns into cool, breezy hiking country with big views back down over the valley — a welcome escape when Skopje is baking. It’s optional, but it turns a mosque visit into a full day out.
How to get from Skopje to Tetovo
By bus
Buses to Tetovo leave frequently from the main bus station beneath Skopje’s railway station, roughly every 30 minutes through the day. The ride is about 50 minutes and covers around 50 km, and a one-way ticket costs only a couple of euros. From the bus stop in Tetovo it’s a short walk to the Colorful Mosque near the river. Buses run from early morning until late evening, so a day trip without a car is completely doable — just check the return times before you set off.
By car or tour
Driving is the most flexible option, especially if you want to add Popova Shapka. It’s a straightforward motorway run of about 45 minutes each way.
