Renting a car in Skopje is one of the best ways to explore North Macedonia at your own pace. The city itself is compact and walkable, but a car really comes into its own for day trips to places like Matka Canyon, Ohrid and the wine country. Here is what you need to know to rent smoothly and get a good deal.

Where to rent
You will find both international rental brands and local agencies in Skopje, with desks at the airport and offices around the city. Local companies are often cheaper and perfectly reliable, while the big international names offer the reassurance of a familiar brand. Booking online in advance almost always works out cheaper than turning up on the day, especially in the busy summer months.
What you need
To rent a car you will generally need to be at least 21 years old, hold a valid driving licence you have had for a year or more, and have a credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Always check exactly what the insurance covers and consider taking the excess-reduction option for peace of mind.
Driving in North Macedonia
Driving is on the right-hand side. Main roads and the motorways towards Ohrid and the south are in good condition and have tolls, which are paid in cash or by card at booths. In the countryside you may meet narrower or winding roads, so allow a little extra time. Keep your documents, headlights on as required, and stick to speed limits, as police checks are common.
Parking in the city
Central Skopje has paid parking zones as well as parking garages at the malls and larger hotels. If your accommodation offers parking it is worth taking it, as street space in the centre can be tight.
Tips for the best deal
Compare a few providers, book early, photograph the car for any existing damage before you drive off, and return it with the same fuel level to avoid extra charges. Picking up and dropping off at the airport is the most convenient option for most visitors – see our airport to city centre guide for how transfers work, and our essential travel tips for more.
