Three days is the ideal amount of time for Skopje: enough to see the whole city at a relaxed pace, explore Matka Canyon and still fit in a day trip to Lake Ohrid. This itinerary is built around walking, local food and minimal transport.
At a glance: Day 1 – city centre and Old Bazaar · Day 2 – museums and Matka Canyon · Day 3 – day trip to Ohrid.
Day 1: Skopje city centre and the Old Bazaar
Morning
- Macedonia Square – start at the heart of the city and admire the statues, fountains and buildings around Macedonia Square.
- Stone Bridge – cross the 15th-century Stone Bridge, which links the new city with the old.
- Old Bazaar – wander the lanes of the Old Bazaar. Use our Old Bazaar walking route so you don’t miss Daut Pasha Hamam and Kapan Han.
Afternoon
- Lunch in the bazaar – kebapi or tavče gravče at a traditional grill (see what to order).
- Kale Fortress – climb up to Kale Fortress for the best free view of Skopje.
- Mother Teresa Memorial House – learn about the city’s most famous daughter at the memorial house.
Evening
Dinner by the Vardar River – many restaurants have terraces facing the lit-up bridges and buildings.

Day 2: Museums and Matka Canyon
Morning
- Skopje City Museum – in the old railway station, its clock frozen at the moment of the 1963 earthquake; see our City Museum guide.
- Art – the Museum of Contemporary Art or the National Gallery in Daut Pasha Hamam.
Afternoon
Head to Matka Canyon, about 30–40 minutes from the centre. Take a boat to Vrelo Cave, walk the path along the lake, visit the Monastery of St. Andrew and have lunch on a terrace overlooking the water. Don’t want to deal with buses? Book a private Matka Canyon tour.
Evening
Dinner and drinks in Debar Maalo – see our Skopje nightlife guide.

Day 3: Day trip to Ohrid
Morning
Leave early for Ohrid, about three hours away by car or bus. The town and lake are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Start at Samuil’s Fortress and the Ancient Theatre.
Afternoon
Walk down to the Church of St. John at Kaneo on its cliff above the lake, have lunch by the water (try the local trout) and wander the Old Town lanes.
Evening
Return to Skopje for a farewell dinner – or, better, stay the night in Ohrid and travel back the next morning.
