The currency in North Macedonia is the Macedonian denar (MKD), and knowing where to change your money can save you a surprising amount. The good news is that Skopje is an easy and cheap place to exchange currency – you just need to know where to go and a couple of simple rules to get the best rate.

Use the exchange offices
The best rates in Skopje are found at the small exchange offices (“menuvachnica”) that you will see all over the city centre and the Old Bazaar. They are quick, legal and usually charge no commission, so what you see on the rate board is what you get. Euros and US dollars are the easiest currencies to change, and rates between offices are broadly similar – though it never hurts to compare a couple.
Where NOT to change money
Avoid changing large amounts at the airport or in hotels, where the rates are noticeably worse. Change just a small amount on arrival if you need cash immediately, then use a city exchange office for the rest. Never change money with individuals approaching you on the street.
ATMs and cards
ATMs are widespread and reliable, and withdrawing denars directly is convenient – just be aware your own bank may add a fee, and if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), always choose to be charged in denars for a better rate. Cards are accepted in most hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but you will still want cash for the bazaar, markets, small cafés and taxis.
Quick tips
Always count your money before leaving the counter, keep some small notes for taxis and coffee, and remember that the denar is a closed currency – it is hard to exchange outside the country, so spend or change back any leftover denars before you leave.
