Skopje’s nightlife is lively, varied and famously affordable. From laid-back café-bars and traditional taverns to late-night clubs and live music, the city has something for every kind of evening – and because prices are low, a night out here goes a long way. Here are the areas and venues to know.

Debar Maalo – the heart of the scene
Debar Maalo is Skopje’s best-loved neighbourhood for eating and drinking. Its leafy streets are packed with restaurants, café-bars and traditional taverns, and it has a relaxed, sociable atmosphere that fills up from the early evening onwards. It is the perfect place to start the night with dinner and drinks before heading elsewhere.
The city centre
Around Macedonia Square and the surrounding streets you will find a mix of stylish cocktail bars, pubs and lounges, many with outdoor terraces that are ideal in the warmer months. This is also where a number of the city’s clubs are found, playing everything from mainstream hits to electronic music into the early hours.

The Old Bazaar after dark
The Old Bazaar is not just for daytime. In the evening its cafés, tea houses and small bars take on a wonderful atmosphere, offering a more low-key, traditional way to spend the night over Turkish coffee, rakija or a shisha.
Traditional taverns and live music
For a truly local experience, look for a kafana – a traditional tavern serving hearty food, local wine and rakija, often with live Macedonian music. These evenings are warm, loud and full of character, and they are a highlight for many visitors.
LGBTQ-friendly options
Skopje also has a small but welcoming selection of relaxed, open-minded venues – see our guide to gay-friendly bars in Skopje for where to go and what to expect.
