Wander one of the largest historic bazaars in the Balkans – mosques, caravanserais, workshops and tea houses. Follow our Old Bazaar walking route.
2. Climb up to Kale Fortress
Entry to Kale Fortress is free, and it has the best view of the old town – come before sunset.
3. Cross the Stone Bridge and explore Macedonia Square
The 15th-century Stone Bridge leads to Macedonia Square, with its giant Warrior on a Horse statue and fountains.
4. Join the free walking tour
The free walking tour runs on a tip basis and is the fastest way to understand the city.
5. Hike Mount Vodno
Walk from Sredno Vodno to the Millennium Cross through pine forest – see our Vodno hiking guide.

6. Spend an afternoon in City Park

7. Find the Umbrella Street
The colourful Umbrella Street in the Old Bazaar is one of the city’s most photographed spots.
8. Visit Skopje’s churches and mosques
See the modern Cathedral of St. Clement of Ohrid, the golden dome of St. Constantine and Helena and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque – dress modestly.
9. Browse Bit Pazar market
The busy market at the edge of the Old Bazaar is the best place to see everyday Skopje: fresh produce, spices, cheese and household goods.
10. See the Skopje Aqueduct
The Skopje Aqueduct stands in open fields on the edge of the city and is free to visit any time.
11. Hunt for statues of the Skopje 2014 project
The centre is full of bronze statues, fountains and neo-classical façades built in the 2010s. Love it or hate it, it makes for a fascinating free walk along both banks of the Vardar.
12. Catch a free concert
In summer look out for open-air events such as Sound of Skopje and free shows during the Skopje Summer Festival.
13. Walk around Matka Canyon
Entry to Matka Canyon is free – you only pay for the bus, a boat or kayak. The lakeside path is a beautiful free hike.
