Millennium Cross Skopje – Panoramic Views from Vodno Mountain

The Millennium Cross is one of Skopje’s most striking landmarks, standing high on Mount Vodno above the city. At 66 metres tall it is one of the largest crosses in the world, and on a clear day it can be seen from almost anywhere in Skopje, glowing brightly after dark.

History

The cross was built in 2002 to mark 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia. Set on the summit of Vodno, it has since become a symbol of the city and a favourite destination for both visitors and locals looking for fresh air and a view.

The views

The main reason to make the trip is the panorama. From the top of Vodno you get a sweeping view over the whole of Skopje, the Vardar valley and the mountains beyond – it is the best vantage point in the city. There is an internal lift inside the base of the cross, as well as a small restaurant and souvenir shop, so you can make a relaxed outing of it.

How to get there

The easiest way up is the Vodno cable car (ropeway), which opened in 2011 and carries you to the summit in only a few minutes. To reach the cable car’s middle station you can take a city bus, a taxi or drive. Keen walkers can also hike up through the forest trails on Vodno, which is a popular weekend activity for locals.

Tips for visiting

Go on a clear day for the best views, and consider timing your visit for late afternoon so you can watch the sun set over the city. Bring a light jacket, as it is cooler and breezier at the top than down in the centre.
