The Park Forest on Vodno
Most of Mount Vodno is covered by a protected park forest that works as Skopje’s green lung. What looks like old woodland is actually the result of a reforestation programme that started in 1946 – before that, the slopes were largely bare. Today the mountain is fully forested, with black pine covering large sections. The highest peak, Krstovar (1,067 m), holds both the mountain hut and the Millennium Cross, and serves as the main viewpoint over Skopje and the valley around it. The forest supports a wide range of wildlife – birds, butterflies, amphibians and mammals – along with more than 140 recorded species of mushrooms. For visitors that means shaded trails in summer and a real escape from the city without having to leave it.
