History: a museum born from solidarity
The museum was founded after the devastating 1963 earthquake that struck the city, and it stands as a symbol of international solidarity. Artists, governments and cultural institutions from around the world donated artworks to help rebuild Skopje’s cultural identity. Today the museum houses a collection of more than 5,000 works.
What to see in the collection
Visitors can explore paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and multimedia works from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. The collection includes works by internationally recognised artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Christo and Pierre Soulages, alongside the most important Macedonian artists of the period.
Throughout the year the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops and international collaborations, so every visit is a little different.
The building
The museum building is an architectural landmark in its own right. It was designed by the Polish architects Wacław Kłyszewski, Jerzy Mokrzyński and Eugeniusz Wierzbicki and donated by the Polish government as part of the international effort to rebuild Skopje. Its low modernist volumes sit naturally on the hillside.
The view from the terrace
The terrace and outdoor areas look over the city centre, the Vardar River, the Stone Bridge and the mountains beyond. Many visitors consider it one of the best viewpoints in Skopje, especially at sunset.

How to get there
The museum is a short uphill walk from the Old Bazaar and right next to Kale Fortress. From Macedonia Square, cross the Stone Bridge and follow Samoilova street up the hill – about 15 minutes on foot.
Tips for visiting
- Combine the museum with Kale Fortress and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque – all three are within a few minutes of each other.
- Visit in the late afternoon and finish on the terrace for sunset.
