Popova Shapka
Popova Shapka sits on the Šar Mountains above Tetovo and is the highest ski area in the country, reaching about 2,380 m. It has the most reliable snow and plenty of off-piste and ski-touring terrain. The season usually runs from mid-December to early April, with lifts open roughly 08:30–16:30. Combine it with the Colorful Mosque on the way – see our Tetovo day trip guide.
Getting there
Drive the A2 motorway to Tetovo (about 50 minutes), then take the mountain road up to the resort. In winter carry chains or use a car with winter tyres. Taxis and minibuses also run from Tetovo.
Mavrovo – Zare Lazarevski
Mavrovo is the country’s best-equipped resort, with 15.5 km of slopes and 13 lifts inside Mavrovo National Park, above Lake Mavrovo and its famous half-submerged church. It suits families and intermediate skiers. The season usually runs from mid-December to mid-April.
Getting there
Take the A2 west past Tetovo and Gostivar and follow the signs to Mavrovo – about 1.5 hours. It is also an easy stop on the way to Ohrid.
