Day Trip from Skopje to Prilep: Markovi Kuli & Treskavec

Prilep is North Macedonia’s tobacco capital and a down-to-earth town in the middle of the Pelagonia plain. Above it rise the strange granite rocks and ruined fortress of Markovi Kuli, and in the hills is the clifftop Treskavec Monastery. It is an easy stop on the way to Bitola or a day trip of its own.

Things to do in Prilep

Markovi Kuli

The ruins of the medieval fortress of King Marko sit on a hill of giant, wind-carved granite boulders just above the town. Scrambling between the rocks for views over Prilep and the plain is the highlight of any visit – go at sunset.

Treskavec Monastery

One of the most dramatic monasteries in the country, built high on a rocky mountainside above Prilep, with frescoes dating back to the medieval period. Reaching it requires a steep hike or a rough road, so allow half a day.

The old town

Prilep’s small Old Bazaar, its clock tower and the ruins of an Ottoman mosque make for a pleasant walk with coffee stops.
