Best things to do in Skopje in summer

Cool off at Matka Canyon

When the city gets hot, locals head for Matka Canyon, a short drive from the centre. Take a boat on the emerald lake, kayak, visit Vrelo Cave or simply have lunch by the water. Prefer not to deal with buses? Book a private Matka tour.

Hike Mount Vodno early

For cooler air and huge views, walk up Mount Vodno to the Millennium Cross early in the morning or in the evening. (The cable car is closed for repairs until about the end of November 2026.)

Relax on the river terraces

Summer in Skopje is made for sitting outside. The café terraces along the Vardar and around City Park are perfect for a cold drink in the shade, and in the evening the whole centre spills outdoors.

📶 Staying connected in Skopje

Mobile data makes Skopje much easier – maps, taxi apps, translations and bus times. The easiest way to get online in North Macedonia is an eSIM: buy it before your trip, install it in 2 minutes and avoid expensive roaming. Plans start from €2.90. Take a day trip to the lake

Summer is ideal for exploring beyond the city: Lake Ohrid’s beaches, mountain villages and the southern wine country are all within reach. See our Ohrid day trip and the best day trips from Skopje.

Eat and drink late

Long summer evenings are perfect for Macedonian food and nightlife. Start with the best restaurants in Skopje, then explore the city’s bars and nightlife areas.

Escape the heat indoors

On the hottest afternoons, air-conditioned museums and malls are a welcome break – try the best museums in Skopje or East Gate Mall.

Tips for a summer visit

  • Carry water and wear sun protection – there is little shade in the Old Bazaar at midday.
  • Book a hotel with air-conditioning (see below).
  • Book early for July and August weekends and festival dates.
  • Many locals are on holiday in August, so some small restaurants close for a week or two.

Where to Stay in Skopje in Summer

Summer afternoons in Skopje are hot, so air-conditioning matters. A central hotel lets you rest at midday and walk out again in the evening when the city comes alive.

  • Skopje Marriott Hotel – right on Macedonia Square, the most central upscale choice.
  • Hotel Senigallia – rooms on a rebuilt sailing ship moored on the Vardar, in the middle of the city.
  • Solun Hotel & Spa – a central hotel with a spa, a short walk from the main square.
