Kratovo is one of the most unusual towns in North Macedonia: it sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano, with medieval stone towers and old stone bridges over a small river running through the middle. Just outside town, the stone “dolls” of Kuklica look like a petrified wedding party. Together they make a great, offbeat day trip from Skopje.

Things to see in Kratovo
The medieval towers
Twelve stone towers once protected the town; six still stand today, including the Clock Tower and the Hadži Kostov, Simić, Krstev, Eminbeg and Zlatković towers. They were built from the late 14th century to guard the wealth of the town’s mines.
The stone bridges
Kratovo’s old stone bridges, built by local masters, cross the river that runs through the crater. Walking from bridge to bridge is the best way to see the town.
A mining town with a mint
Kratovo grew rich from silver and gold mines in Roman, medieval and Ottoman times. In the late 15th century it even had a mint – at one point the second most important in the Ottoman Empire. Look out for the 19th-century houses that reflect that wealth.

Kuklica stone dolls
About 8 km from Kratovo, near the village of Kuklica, hundreds of natural stone pillars stand on a hillside over the Kriva River valley. These earth pyramids were shaped by erosion over thousands of years, and many look like human figures – which gave the place its name (kukli means “dolls”). Local legend tells of a wedding party turned to stone. A short marked path leads around the site; go in the late afternoon for the best light.
