The Church of St. Panteleimon in Nerezi is a small 12th-century church on the slopes of Mount Vodno – and one of the most important monuments of Byzantine art anywhere. Its frescoes, painted in 1164, show emotion and realism that art historians usually associate with the Renaissance, more than 200 years later.

History
The church was commissioned in 1164 by Alexios Angelos Komnenos, a Byzantine noble related to the imperial family, and dedicated to St. Panteleimon, the patron saint of physicians and healers. It is a compact cross-in-square church built of stone and brick, with a central dome and four smaller ones. It is still an active monastery church today.
The frescoes
The frescoes are the reason to come. They are celebrated for their emotional intensity and naturalism – faces show real grief and tenderness, bodies have weight and movement.
The Lamentation of Christ
The most famous scene shows the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ, her face pressed to his. Its raw emotion and human expression were revolutionary for the time, and it is often described as a forerunner of Renaissance painting.
Other scenes
