Day Trip from Skopje to Bitola & Heraclea Lyncestis

Bitola is North Macedonia’s second city and its most elegant: a pedestrian boulevard lined with 19th-century consular houses, cafés full of locals, and the ancient city of Heraclea Lyncestis just outside town. It is about 2.5 hours from Skopje – a long day trip, or better, an overnight stay.

Things to do in Bitola

Walk Širok Sokak

Bitola’s main pedestrian street is lined with pastel 19th-century houses built when the town was home to many foreign consulates. In the evening the whole town comes out to stroll and sit in the cafés – it is one of the most pleasant streets in the Balkans.

Heraclea Lyncestis

About 2 km south of the centre lies Heraclea Lyncestis, an ancient city founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC. Highlights are the Roman theatre built under Emperor Hadrian and the Great Basilica, whose floors are covered in beautifully preserved early Christian mosaics of birds, trees and animals.

Old Bazaar and Clock Tower

Bitola’s own Ottoman bazaar, the clock tower and several historic mosques sit just off Širok Sokak – smaller and quieter than Skopje’s Old Bazaar.

Pelister National Park

Above the town rises Mount Pelister, famous for its Molika pine forests and glacial lakes known as “Pelister’s Eyes”. In winter the small Kopanki ski area is popular with families (see skiing near Skopje).
