Most visitors do not need a visa for North Macedonia. Citizens of the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period visa-free. You need a passport valid for at least three months, proof of accommodation, and – if you are not in a hotel – registration with the police. Here is what to know before your trip in 2026.

Entry rules can change. Always confirm with your government’s travel advice or North Macedonia’s embassy before you travel. Last checked: October 2026.

Passport and documents
- Passport validity: at least three months beyond your planned stay, with a blank page for stamps.
- ID cards: many EU/EEA citizens can also enter with a national ID card – check before you go.
- Accommodation: border officers may ask to see a hotel booking or address.
- Cash: amounts of €10,000 or more must be declared on entry and exit.
Police registration
All foreigners must be registered with the police within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels, hostels and licensed guesthouses do this for you automatically when they take your passport at check-in. If you stay with friends or in a private flat, the host should register you – otherwise go to the nearest police station together. Not registering can lead to a fine.

The 90/180-day rule
Visa-free visitors can spend a total of 90 days in North Macedonia within any 180-day period. North Macedonia is not in the Schengen area, so days spent here do not count towards your Schengen 90 days – a useful detail on longer Balkan trips. Overstaying can lead to fines and entry bans.
Arriving by land
If you travel overland from Greece or Bulgaria you will leave the Schengen area and go through full passport checks. See our transport guides to Thessaloniki, Sofia and Pristina for border details.
