Mount Vodno is Skopje’s own mountain: a forested ridge that rises right behind the city to 1,066 metres, crowned by the Millennium Cross. In 15 minutes you can swap traffic for pine forest, and from the top you see the whole Skopje valley. This guide covers the best hiking routes, how to get up, and what to expect in 2026.
Update (October 2026): the Vodno cable car has been closed since spring 2026 for repairs after safety inspections. The City of Skopje expects it to reopen by the end of November 2026. Until then, drive or take a taxi to Sredno Vodno and walk up (about 1–1.5 hours).

Best hiking routes on Vodno
Sredno Vodno to the Millennium Cross (easy–moderate)
The most popular route. From the car park at Sredno Vodno, marked forest paths climb steadily to the summit in about 1–1.5 hours. It is busy with locals at weekends, so you won’t get lost. Read more about the summit in our Millennium Cross guide.
From the city to the summit (moderate)
Start at the foot of the mountain on the southern edge of the city and walk all the way up through the forest. Allow 3–4 hours return and take water – there are few places to refill.
Along the ridge (long)
Experienced hikers can follow the ridge beyond the summit towards Matka Canyon – a full-day route that needs a map, good shoes and an early start. If you just want to see the canyon, a trip to Matka by bus or a private tour is much easier.

The forest park on Vodno
Most of Vodno is a protected park forest and works as Skopje’s green lung. What looks like old woodland is actually the result of a reforestation programme that started in 1946 – before that, the slopes were largely bare. Today black pine covers large sections, and the forest is home to many birds, butterflies and mammals, plus more than 140 recorded species of mushrooms. For visitors that means shaded trails even in summer.
Best time to hike Vodno
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal: mild temperatures and clear views. In summer, start early in the morning to avoid the heat. In winter the summit can be snowy and icy – take proper footwear. For the city’s weather month by month, see the best time to visit Skopje.
Tips for hiking Vodno
- Wear hiking or trail shoes – paths are steep and rocky in places.
- Bring water and a layer; it is noticeably cooler at the top.
- Download an offline map before you go (mobile coverage is good on most of the mountain).
- Avoid the summit in strong wind or storms.
