Skopje is compact, inexpensive and rarely crowded, so it suits both short city breaks and longer stays used as a base for exploring the country. Two to three days is enough for the city itself, with more time for day trips. Currency and payments

The local currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and shops, but you will need cash for the bazaar, markets, small cafés and taxis.
