Kapan Han: Discover Skopje’s Historic Caravanserai in the Old Bazaar

Kapan Han is one of the oldest and best-preserved caravanserais in Skopje’s Old Bazaar. Built in Ottoman times as an inn for travelling merchants, it once offered traders a place to rest, store their goods and stable their animals – and today it is one of the most atmospheric corners of the old town.

What is a caravanserai?

A caravanserai (in Turkish, a “han”) was the roadside inn of the trading world – a fortified building arranged around a central courtyard where merchant caravans could safely spend the night. Kapan Han follows exactly this design, with rooms opening onto an inner courtyard, and it gives a vivid sense of how important Skopje once was as a stop on the region’s trade routes.

Carefully preserved over the centuries, Kapan Han now blends its historic architecture with a handful of restaurants and cafés set around the courtyard. It is a lovely place to step in out of the bustle of the bazaar, admire the old stonework and wooden galleries, and enjoy a coffee or a traditional meal in a genuinely historic setting.

How to get there

Kapan Han sits in the heart of the Old Bazaar, an easy walk across the Stone Bridge from Macedonia Square. There is no entrance fee to look around, and the courtyard eateries keep it lively from the daytime into the evening.
