Stone Bridge Skopje – Iconic Historical Landmark over the Vardar River

The Stone Bridge (Kamen Most) is the most recognisable landmark in Skopje, stretching across the Vardar River – the longest river in North Macedonia – to link the modern city centre with its Ottoman-era old town. Standing right beside Macedonia Square, it is the natural starting point for almost any walk through the capital.

A short history of the Stone Bridge

The bridge rests on much older foundations – parts are believed to date back to Roman times – but the structure you see today was built between 1451 and 1469, during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror. Made entirely of solid stone blocks, it runs roughly 214 metres across the river and is carried by twelve semicircular arches. Over the centuries it has been damaged and rebuilt many times, yet it has always kept its original character.

The bridge is so central to the city’s identity that it forms the main element of Skopje’s coat of arms and appears on the city’s flag. Located in the Centar municipality, it connects Macedonia Square with the historic Old Bazaar.

What to see and do

Crossing the Stone Bridge on foot is one of the simplest pleasures in Skopje. From the middle you get open views along the Vardar, with Kale Fortress on the hill to one side and the fountains and monuments of Macedonia Square to the other. Street musicians, artists and locals out for an evening stroll give the bridge a lively feel, especially after sunset when it is beautifully lit.

How to get there

The bridge sits in the very heart of Skopje and is completely walkable from anywhere in the centre. If you begin at Macedonia Square you are already at its southern end; cross over and you step straight into the cobbled lanes of the Old Bazaar. It is free to visit and open at all hours, making it an easy stop at any point in the day.

Tips for visiting

Early morning and the hour around sunset are the best times for photos, when the light is soft and the crowds are thinner. Take your time on the far bank to look back at the bridge with the square behind it – it is the classic Skopje postcard view. Comfortable shoes are worth it, as most of the surrounding old town is paved with stone.
