Ohrid is North Macedonia’s lake town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and choosing the right area makes a big difference. Stay in the Old Town for churches and atmosphere, on the lakeside promenade for convenience, or along the south shore for beaches and quiet. Here is where to stay in Ohrid, especially if you are coming from Skopje.

Ohrid Old Town
The hillside Old Town is the heart of Ohrid: Samuil’s Fortress, the Ancient Theatre, Plaošnik and the cliff-top Church of St. John at Kaneo are all within walking distance. Many guesthouses are in restored traditional houses with lake views. Expect stairs and cobblestones – not ideal with heavy suitcases.

The lakeside promenade and town centre
The flat area along the lake and around the harbour has the most hotels, restaurants and bars, and it is a short walk to the Old Town. It is the easiest choice if you arrive by bus or with children. In peak summer it is lively until late.

South shore: beaches towards St. Naum
South of town the road follows the lake past beaches and villages towards the Monastery of St. Naum near the Albanian border. Hotels and apartments here are quieter and closer to the water – perfect for a beach holiday if you have a car.
