Kale Fortress (Skopje Fortress, Skopsko Kale) sits on the highest point of the old town, above the Old Bazaar and the Vardar River. It is the oldest landmark in the city, it is free to visit, and it has the best view of Skopje – which is why it belongs on every one-day Skopje itinerary.

A short history of Kale Fortress
People have lived on this hill for thousands of years. Excavations that began in 2006–2007 uncovered houses and objects from around 3000 BC, including clay ornaments and early wind instruments.
The first fortress was built in the 6th century AD, most likely under Emperor Justinian I, after an earthquake destroyed the Roman city of Scupi in 518. Builders used yellow limestone and travertine – and even reused stones with Latin inscriptions from Scupi. The walls were rebuilt in the 10th and 11th centuries, when Skopje was an important Byzantine and Bulgarian stronghold.
In 1346 the Serbian ruler Stefan Dušan was crowned emperor here. Under the Ottomans the fortress was repaired (an inscription over the gate dates works to 1446), and in 1660 the traveller Evliya Çelebi described double walls, around 70 bastions and a wooden drawbridge.
The 1963 earthquake badly damaged the walls. Since then large sections have been restored, and in 2010 archaeologists found here the largest hoard of Byzantine coins ever discovered in Macedonia.

- The green inner courtyard – a quiet place to sit away from the traffic, popular with locals at sunset.
- Summer events – the fortress occasionally hosts concerts and open-air events, especially during the Skopje Summer Festival.
Best views and photo spots
From the southern walls you look straight down at the Old Bazaar’s domes and minarets, the Stone Bridge and Macedonia Square, with the Millennium Cross on Mount Vodno behind them. Come about an hour before sunset: the light is softer and the city lights come on as you leave.
How to get to Kale Fortress
From Macedonia Square, cross the Stone Bridge, pass the museums on the riverbank and walk uphill along Samoilova street. It takes 10–15 minutes on foot. A taxi from the centre costs very little, but the walk through the Old Bazaar is half the fun.

- Wear comfortable shoes – paths are uneven and partly unpaved.
- There is little shade inside, so bring water in summer.
- Combine Kale with the Museum of Contemporary Art next door and the Mustafa Pasha Mosque just below.
